Moscow, Jun 7 : In a devastating turn of events, four Indian medical students lost their lives in a drowning accident in a river near St. Petersburg, Russia. The Indian missions in the country are actively coordinating with Russian authorities to expedite the process of repatriating their bodies to their respective families.
The victims, two boys and two girls aged between 18 and 20, were enrolled at Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod city, located nearby. According to local media reports, the incident occurred when a female Indian student ventured into the waters of the river Volkhov from the beach and found herself in distress. In a brave attempt to rescue her, her four companions also tragically drowned in the river.
Fortunately, local residents were able to rescue a third boy from the water, averting further tragedy. The Embassy of India in Moscow released a statement confirming their efforts to facilitate the swift repatriation of the victims’ bodies to their families. They also assured appropriate medical care for the surviving student.
The Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, acknowledging the immense loss. The consulate is actively collaborating with local authorities in Veliky Novgorod to expedite the repatriation process. They have also reached out to the bereaved families, offering comprehensive support during this difficult time.
