NEW DELHI, June 13: The Supreme Court, following the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) recommendation, has cancelled the grace marks awarded to over 1,500 students in the NEET-UG 2024 examinations and ordered a retest for the affected candidates. The Court has directed that the retest results be announced before the commencement of the counselling process for undergraduate medical courses. The retest is expected to take place on June 23.
The decision came from a vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, who accepted the NTA’s proposal to nullify the grace marks awarded to 1,563 students to compensate for lost time during the examination. The NTA will release revised scores reflecting the students’ original marks without the added grace marks. This decision follows complaints from aspirants, prompting the higher education ministry to form a four-member panel to investigate the alleged irregularities.
Justice Nath, pronouncing the judgment, stated, “It has been suggested that the score cards of the affected 1,563 candidates will stand cancelled and withdrawn. These candidates will be informed of their actual scores, without compensatory marks. A re-exam will be conducted for the affected 1,563 candidates. Results of those who don’t wish to re-appear will be declared based on actual marks,” as reported by Live Law.
The Court emphasized the need for the re-examination results to be declared promptly, ensuring that the admission process remains on schedule. The re-examination date, likely June 23, will be officially notified on Thursday.
The Supreme Court has scheduled further hearings on July 8 to address pleas regarding the cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 examinations and allegations of malpractices.
