J&K Sees Night Temperature Rise; Jammu Braces for Heat Wave

SRINAGAR, May 21: Night temperatures increased across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, coinciding with a forecast for mainly dry weather and a looming heat wave over the plains of the Jammu division starting May 22.

According to a meteorological department official, Srinagar recorded a low of 13.2°C, up from 12.4°C the previous night, which is 1.5°C above normal for this time of year. Qazigund saw a minimum temperature of 10.6°C, slightly higher than the previous night’s 10.2°C, which is 0.3°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

In Pahalgam, the temperature slightly decreased to 6.2°C from 6.5°C, which is typical for the popular south Kashmir resort. Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of 10.8°C, up from 9.7°C, 0.7°C above normal.

Kupwara town experienced a low of 10.5°C, up from 9.6°C, which is 0.1°C above normal. In the north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the world-famous skiing resort Gulmarg saw a slight increase in temperature to 8.2°C from 8.0°C, 1.4°C above normal.

Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 24.7°C, slightly lower than the previous night’s 25.1°C but still 0.3°C above normal for the winter capital of J&K. Banihal recorded a low of 13.0°C, Batote 15.8°C, and Bhaderwah 11.6°C.

The forecast predicts generally dry weather until May 28, with no significant weather activity expected. However, a heat wave is anticipated to hit the plains of the Jammu Division starting May 22. Hot and dry conditions are expected to persist in the hilly districts of Jammu Division over the next few days.
