The annual Amarnath Yatra has been suspended from the Baltal route due to adverse weather conditions and ongoing repair work on the pilgrimage track. This decision came into effect on Friday as officials weighed the safety of the thousands of devotees participating in the pilgrimage.
Heavy rainfall hit the Baltal area on Thursday night, leading to a minor flash flood. Fortunately, officials reported no injuries or property damage linked to this incident. In light of the stormy conditions, no pilgrims can make their way towards the revered cave shrine from the Baltal route.
Additionally, the yatra had already seen a suspension from the Pahalgam route for similar repair activities. Current efforts focus on ensuring the track’s safety and accessibility for the remaining duration of the pilgrimage.
This year’s Amarnath Yatra commenced on July 3, attracting around 450,000 devotees, who have flocked to pay their respects at the shrine, known for housing the naturally occurring ice lingam. The yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 28, coinciding with the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Officials remain on high alert as they monitor weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of safety for all pilgrims. They advised potential devotees to stay updated on yatra status, especially those planning to visit via the Baltal route, as repair work continues.
As the pilgrimage unfolds, local authorities are committed to maintaining proper safety measures while accommodating the influx of devotees. They urge everyone to cooperate during this period of adjustment. The sacred yatra has been a significant event for the Hindu community, and maintaining safe passage is a priority.
