The Lok Sabha adjourned on Friday amid intense protests by Opposition members, primarily concerning the NEET paper leak and allegations related to the Ram temple donation theft. The session could not continue effectively due to the uproar, signalling escalating tensions in Parliament.
The legislative assembly managed to pass the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without any debate, a move seen by many as an effort to push through key legislation amid chaos. This highlights a growing trend where the government prioritises legislative agendas even against the backdrop of fierce Opposition dissent.
Various papers and reports from Parliamentary committees were tabled, but the parliamentary atmosphere remained charged. Opposition leaders had called for a response from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding allegations of police excesses during recent student protests related to the NEET paper leak. In a spirited defence, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Opposition cannot dictate which minister addresses the House.
Rijiju remarked that Home Minister Shah consistently attends Parliament and stresses the importance of maintaining decorum and focus on legislative work. He urged the Opposition to cease their disruptions, referring to their actions as ‘drama.’
The Chair, led by Dilip Saikia, implored the protesting members to return to their seats, stating, “Please go to your seats. Please cooperate,” in an attempt to restore order during the session.
However, the enhancements fell on deaf ears as the protests and sloganeering escalated, leading to an early adjournment of the Zero Hour just 16 minutes after it commenced. As a result, the House will reconvene on Monday, prolonging the current standoff.
This session of Parliament, part of the Monsoon session which commenced on July 20, has experienced significant disruptions, primarily due to ongoing disagreements between the ruling party and the Opposition. The repeated washout of the Question Hour emphasizes the growing discord, with both sides entrenched in their respective positions.
