The annual Budha Amarnath Yatra commenced on August 17, 2023, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagging off the first batch of pilgrims from Jammu. This religious pilgrimage will span 12 days and culminate on Raksha Bandhan, August 28.
In a ceremony rife with spiritual significance, Sinha initiated the journey at Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas around 6:30 AM, following a ceremonial pooja. He expressed his wishes for a safe and fulfilling experience for all devotees, stating, “This divine pilgrimage is a transformative experience for devotees,” on his social media.
With the yatra attracting pilgrims from across India, tight security measures accompany the journey. Police have deployed escort for pilgrim convoys and stationed additional armed forces along the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch route to ensure a smooth passage.
Authorities implemented multi-tier security and surveillance in Rajouri and Poonch. Special operations groups conduct search operations at key locations, including lodging sites. This comprehensive plan reflects the importance of security in protecting pilgrims, especially after previous disruptions concerning regional unrest.
“The yatra is not merely a physical journey but a profound inward journey towards self-realization,” Sinha emphasized during the inaugural function, highlighting the pilgrimage’s significance.
As the yatra unfolds, devotees chant slogans of devotion such as “Bam Bam Bhole” and “Jai Bholenath,” showcasing the fervor that this journey inspires. Pilgrims like Rita Devi from Rajasthan expressed excitement about their spiritual journey, stating, “We are proud to be part of this religious journey.”
Devrattan from Karnataka shared his perspective on the yatra’s cultural impact, expressing relief at its return after disturbances caused by terror activities. He remarked on the yatra’s immense significance for both religious and cultural identity.
In anticipation of the influx of devotees, the Traffic Police issued advisories introducing mandatory cut-off timings for registered Budha Amarnath Yatra convoys from August 17 to 28. Such measures aim to provide orderly flow and enhance the safety of all participants.
Various reception counters and langars have been established en route at critical transit stops, including Sunderbani, Nowshera, and Rajal in Rajouri district. This initiative seeks to offer logistical support and hospitality to the pilgrims.
To facilitate the yatra, the Poonch district administration launched an online portal that enables advance registration for pilgrims arriving from all corners of the nation, streamlining the process and enhancing organization.
The Budha Amarnath shrine, located approximately 4,600 feet above sea level, is a revered site believed to house a self-manifested white stone Shivling. Tradition dictates that devotees take a holy dip in the nearby Pulastya River before entering the temple to offer prayers, marking the special connection between the natural and divine.
