Tight Security Arrangements in Kashmir for Independence Day

In anticipation of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, stringent security measures have been implemented throughout Kashmir, confirmed V K Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the region. The preparations aim to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the public festivities scheduled for August 15.

Birdi spoke to reporters on Tuesday after overseeing security preparations at Balidan Stambh in Srinagar. He underscored that the Jammu and Kashmir Police are maintaining extensive security measures not only in Srinagar but also across various districts in the valley.

“Multi-layered security arrangements are in place at specific venues and in the surrounding areas to safeguard the public,” Birdi stated, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining order during the celebrations. The IGP encouraged local residents to actively participate in the festivities, highlighting its significance as a public function.

Birdi’s remarks came as part of a comprehensive review of security protocols for Independence Day. He noted that police support the event predominantly as facilitators and organizers.

“We urge people to come out in large numbers for the celebrations. Your participation is crucial for the success of these events,” Birdi further stated.

On Monday, Birdi chaired a security review meeting involving senior officials from various security agencies focused on the Independence Day preparations and overall safety in the valley. Attendees included the IG of the Border Security Force (BSF), the IG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and additional security personnel.

The meeting served to assess security measures across the region, where district police heads presented updates regarding their specific arrangements for the celebrations. Senior officers reported that they are intensifying area domination and patrolling efforts, particularly in sensitive and vulnerable locations.

Additionally, Birdi provided directions to strengthen security checkpoints—especially during nighttime—along critical entry and exit routes around the city. “Strict vigilance against elements opposed to public safety is essential,” he added, emphasizing the need for heightened alertness across all jurisdictions.

The IGP also addressed ongoing investigations regarding recent attacks in the Anantnag and Pulwama districts. “Investigations are ongoing, and it is not appropriate to disclose details at this stage,” he mentioned, ensuring the media and public that updates would be provided when available.

As part of the heightened security measures, police initiated surprise checks and conducting frisking operations in prominent areas like Lal Chowk to maintain law and order. These steps form part of an overarching strategy to ensure that residents can celebrate their national independence securely and peacefully.

As Independence Day approaches, the focus remains on creating a safe environment for citizens to celebrate their heritage, with authorities remaining vigilant against any potential threats. Support from the community in participating in festivities will help further enhance a sense of unity and patriotism.
